Supper Club emails

January 27, 2008

If you have not been receiving the supper club emails recently, then please email me (mrcommodore at yahoo) and I will add you to the list.  If you’re available to host, we still need some hosts!

Project Leader

January 21, 2008

I believe we will be much more likely to translate our generally positive thoughts toward an outreach project into actual action if we have someone who would be willing to spearhead it for us.  I suspect that Urban Ministries is probably the best bet, because of the church’s pre-existing relationship there.  This would involve getting a group to commit to go, picking a day, setting up childcare (either with class people or some babysitters), etc.  One shot deal — no long term commitment!  Email me if you’d be willing.

2008 Units

January 14, 2008

After some discussion on Sunday, the class seems interested in the following units:  1) a comparative religion study, including Islam and perhaps other religions; 2) a study on the challenges associated with different life stages (which would provide great opportunities for guest leaders; 3) a study of a short epistle, like Ephesians.  More on the particulars and scheduling later.

I know there has also been interest in some unit particular to marriage.  Up until now I have resisted this somewhat, because I want this class to have appeal to single and married alike, even given our largely married attendance.   However, I would be open to at least doing a short-term (maybe a month) married unit, if anyone has any more particular ideas about the material.  I think the lessons could be presented in a way that the listener would not have to be married to appreciate it.

Outreach Project?

January 8, 2008

We’ve spoken before of doing some sort of outreach project, like working at Habitat for Humanity or something, as a class.  Is there still interest in this?

I know many, including myself, have difficulty doing these sorts of things because of having small children.  Perhaps some could watch all the children while others went out for a long morning.  Let me know what your thoughts are.

January Study — Elijah

January 5, 2008

For this month, we will begin with a short study of the prophet Elijah, who has a lot of interesting stories surrounding him which we probably rarely consider all together.

Also, especially in the first few classes of the year, I would like to do what we did at the end of the summer and agree on the next two or three things we will study, and how long we will devote to each. Hopefully we can continue to have a nice mix between studies directly on Biblical passages (like our Hebrews study), topical “real-life” studies (like our money study), and studies on theological frameworks (like our sacraments study).

Finally, let me reiterate that I would love for others to teach some units, whether you have a general openness to teaching, or a particular thing you would like to lead.
