End of Summer Thoughts

First, a shout-out to Matt for pinch hitting today for the last lesson in the communion unit. I’m sure it went great, though I have to assume since I am currently at the beach.

A group of your peers has set the curriculum for the upcoming year, and I think it will have some pretty interesting stuff in it. Our next unit will be on “Vocation” — as in, work — what do you do all day, how does it define you, do you feel called to this work, how does your faith impact your work, etc. We will build this unit around having people share about some of the many vocations we have in class — doctor, lawyer, teacher, private investigator (did you know we have one in class? No, he doesn’t wear a trench coat), stay-home parent, etc.

Finally, especially now that the summer is almost over and people are a little less scattered, we are going to start being more deliberate about having monthly socials/potlucks. Amy G will be coordinating, and hosts are always encouraged to open their homes!

Bagels/breakfast stuff

Meeting in Room 402 this summer

The children’s ministry needed our usual room, the Music Room, during the summer. Therefore if you’re just joining us, note that we will be in Room 402 until the summer ends. It is upstairs half a flight from the sanctuary.

Unit for second half of the summer

We will be studying Communion/The Lord’s Supper/The Eucharist. The central question to this unit will be one that I have asked myself, and which I know others share — “I have communion every month, but sometimes I feel like I’m not getting out of it what I should, or that it could be a more meaningful experience. What am I missing?”

Sure, we’re going to have some theological discussions, and sure, we’ll throw around some words like “transubstantiation,” but the focus of this class will be to understand why we practice communion as we do and how to enhance our communion experience through better understanding and preparation each time it is offered at church. After the more lecture-oriented style that the unit on Mormonism necessitated, this will be a return to discussion-oriented class.

New Unit: Mormonism

First, a thanks to Will for teaching the Thomas A Kempis unit that we just wrapped.

Now on to our comparative religion unit on Mormonism. If the unit we did on Islam a couple of years ago is any guide, this should be pretty interesting. I personally find that you really learn the most about what you believe when you study what other people believe. Everyone — bring your questions! This will be very open, as always.

Can you believe that the dreaded “Spring forward” / lose an hour is this Sunday, March 14th? I’ll try to save a bagel of shame for those who arrive an hour late.

And the hits keep on coming. The next two units for CIA will take advantage of two more of our generous members who have agreed to teach. Will R will be teaching a unit on Thomas A’Kempis and Brooklyne T will be teaching a unit on Mormonism.

We WILL have class Feb. 7th.
